The trend to branding and niche or specialty marketing is growing and is expected to continue to grow, especially among smaller hotels. Branding involves "grouping" hotels that have features appealing to groups of prospective customers with specialized interests and/or characteristics. Niche marketing involves target marketing to these specialized groups of prospective customers.

To help you to better understand the concepts of branding and niche marketing, we have provided information on four types of specialty hotel types or "brands".

Bed & Breakfasts
Bed & Breakfasts, or B&Bs, are generally small establishments originally built as a single family residence or self-contained cottages. Usually the owner lives on the premises. They tend to be located in community and rural settings. The rooms may be individually decorated and may have shared or private bathrooms. Breakfast is included in the overnight room rate.

Often, they are built with local woods and other materials and use alternative sources of energy, such as solar power. An excellent source of information on ecolodges is The Ecotourism Society's web site at http://www.ecotourism.org/.
