Hurricane Preparedness Workshop

The Mitigation of Hurricane Damage and Dislocation for the Tourism Sector  Course materials including Hurricane Preparedness Manual and handouts will be provided.  Space is limited to 25 participants on a first come first serve basis.  Cost of registration is $250 (US dollars) for non-Hotel Association members and free for CAST members, includes lunch.  This 2 day course is designed for business managers, engineers or risk prevention managers.

Hurricane Preparedness Workshop:  A 3 day course designed for business managers, engineers, or risk prevention managers.  It is designed to complement the Hurricane Preparedness Manual and includes topics such as; "Before the Hurricane Strikes, Communication Plan, Recovery and Restoration, Managing Insurance Coverage and Preparation of an Action Plan."

Preventative Maintenance:  A one day workshop review equipment and facilities and design a preventative maintenance program for hotels.  The workshop will provide maintenance personnel with the skills and techniques to develop, implement and manage a planned maintenance program.

Green Purchasing to Reduce Costs and Improve the Environment:  is a four (4) hour course designed for personnel responsible for departmental or organizational purchasing.  The organizational purchasing policy is a key requirement of Green Globe certification and the course assists participants in defining an environmental purchasing policy, establishing a system for regular review of products and researching and sourcing alternatives.

Documentation and Monitoring for Green Globe Certification:  is an 8 hour course designed to assist the Green Team members in fulfilling the requirements of Green Globe certification.  The course reviews Green Globe requirements specific to measuring impact and record keeping facilities the development of the EMS Operational Manual which is the cornerstone of the certification process. 

Go Eco!  Training for the Front Line Staff:  A four (4) hour general environmental awareness course targeted at key operational areas.  The course is delivered twice in one day to ensure the greatest possible contact with staff  and introduces participants to the need for environmental conservation and the impacts of their day to day operations on the environment.  The course is highly dynamic and uses a variety of visual and interactive exercises to engage participants.  

Greening Your Hotel for Managers and Green Team: an eight (8) hour "best practice" overview designed to introduce management to the benefits of good environmental management.  The course focuses on current industry "best practices", cost savings opportunities and mechanisms for communications with guests, staff and suppliers.

Healthy Housekeeping for a Clean, Green and Pristine Future:  is a four(4) hour departmental specific training program for laundry and housekeeping staff.  The course is designed to educate housekeeping staff as to their role in the implementation and maintenance of the hotel's environmental program.

Food & Beverage, the Environment and You!:  A four hour departmental specific training program for the food an beverage department staff.  The course is designed to educate food and beverage personnel as the their role in the implementation and maintenance of the hotel's environmental program.  Energy Management, Monitoring and Conservation Training.  

Green Gorilla Training Tactics for Operational Change:   This is a 16 hour course designed to assist supervisors and Green Team members in affecting change within the organization.  The course covers training, coaching, and mentoring strategies to help supervisors and Green Team members to develop and deliver training programs on the job.

Energy Management, Monitoring, and Conservation: An eight (8) hour training course directed at maintenance personnel.  The course covers economic evaluation methods to determine the feasibility of alternative technologies and energy sources, planning and conducting energy audits, developing and energy management program and the implementation of techniques available to conserve energy.  

Design of Tourism Facilities Workshop
The course is to be directed at both public and private sector entities, with the objective of encouraging dialogue and building consensus as to best practice guidelines for coastal developments. The workshop is broken down into four primary components:

Introduction to Coastal Ecosystems

Advantages of Building "Green" Sustainable Infrastructure (Energy, Water, Waste, and Waste Water Systems)

Guidelines for Construction (Materials and Practices for Developers)

We have modified the course to be delivered in three days and can accommodate up to 20 participants. The most advantageous persons to attend would be

  • financial representatives
  • representatives from educational institutions

Environmental Management Systems Workshops:  Learn how you too can start an Environmental Management System in your hotel and begin to cut your costs, track your resource consumption and operate in an environmentally responsible manner.

This is a 2 day workshop and covers:

Greening Your Hotel Seminar This program is directed at the General Managers/Owners of hotels and a person designated by them as their Environmental Action Plan Coordinator.  Due to the personalized nature of this seminar, CAST must limit participation to only 15 properties per seminar.  Each hotel will send two representatives, the General Manager and the Environmental Action Plan Coordinator.  A copy of the Environmental Toolkit is included as course materials.

Energy Workshops

Energy Efficiency Certification for Engineers:  CAST and the Florida Solar Energy Center are sponsoring a series of Caribbean hotel training programs on energy efficiency and renewable energy projects and strategies.  Completion of all five courses leads to designation as a "Certified Renewable Energy Specialist" by FSEC.

CAST 101Introduction to Energy Efficiency  A 1 1/2 day course providing a general overview of the various cost-effective technologies, along with an energy audit of a hotel.  The course covers energy conservation management, energy auditing and accounting, economic evaluation and financing, and energy conservation techniques.

CAST 102:  Hotel Energy Efficiency  A 1 day course focusing on details of improving air-conditioning, equipment, indoor moisture problems, efficient lighting systems, and other energy-efficiency products and strategies.

CAST 103:  Photovoltaics  A 1 day course on practical, cost effective applications of solar electric technologies in hotels, including lighting, emergency situations, etc..

CAST 104:  Solar Water Heating  A 1 day course on large solar water heating and pool heating systems.

CAST 105:  Water Issues  A 1 day course on solar-supported water and waste water systems.  The program also includes a product trade show.

What is CAST?

Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism
The Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST) program is a major initiative of the CHA. The mission of CAST is to enhance the practices of the region's hotel and tourism operators by providing high quality education and training related to sustainable tourism.

CHA/CAST has been highly successful in promoting the management of natural resources, in providing access to expertise in sustainable tourism and in assisting hotel and tourism operators in the Caribbean region in finding solutions to arrest the degradation of the environment, thus ensuring the continued prosperity of the Caribbean region.

  • Environmental audit - Identifies opportunities to reduce operating costs, offers recommendations on cutting edge technologies, and provides operator with documented Environmental Action Plan
  • Rent an Engineer - Enables small hotels to have access to skilled Energy & Environmental Engineers who will provide assistance in reducing costs and improving operational efficiency
  • Caribbean Tourism, Health, Safety, and Resource Conservation Project - (Healthy Hotels Project) - A three year joint initiative with the Caribbean Epidemiology Center (CAREC) that takes a holistic approach to improving the health, hygiene and environmental conditions for guests and staff in hotels in the region.
  • Hurricane Preparedness Workshops - Designed to encourage implementation of the CHA/CTO Hurricane Preparedness manual.
  • Energy Efficiency Training - Environmental Toolkit and environmental excellence seminars provide information on environmental programmes.
